VA describes daily challenges facing Veterans experiencing homelessness and outlines support programs
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs published an article on November 7, 2026, describing how Veterans experiencing homelessness spend their days and the VA programs available to help them. The article was written by officials from the VA Homeless Programs Office.
According to the VA, many Veterans experiencing homelessness are working, including in temporary or seasonal jobs. The department said that in communities with limited affordable housing, a paycheck may not cover rent, utilities, a security deposit and other housing costs.
The VA said daily decisions can depend on safety, weather, health, work schedules and whether Veterans can protect their belongings. It added that health care can be harder to manage without reliable storage, transportation or a private place to take medication, since some medications must be kept cool or taken at set times.
The department listed several programs. They include Grant and Per Diem transitional housing, Health Care for Homeless Veterans outreach and case management, Homeless Patient Aligned Care Teams that provide primary and mental health care, and Mobile Medical Units.
The VA said community members can help by offering meals or rides to appointments. The National Call Center for Homeless Veterans is available 24/7 at 877-424-3838, the department said.
