VA program helps veterans use online health tools and stay safe online
A Department of Veterans Affairs program called Tech4Vets is helping veterans use digital tools for their healthcare and benefits, the VA said. The program runs out of the Northern Colorado VA Clinic in Loveland, Colorado. It serves veterans across northern Colorado, southern Wyoming and eastern Nebraska.
According to the VA, the program is led by Michelle Walton, the My HealtheVet coordinator for the Cheyenne VA Health Care System, with help from community volunteers. At a recent event, Walton and volunteers helped 20 veterans access VA.gov, renew prescriptions, request medical records and send secure messages to their VA healthcare teams, the department said.
Volunteer Cruz Munoz, a cybersecurity student, gave veterans guidance on spotting possible scams, the VA said. His advice included using strong passwords, verifying senders before clicking links, keeping devices updated, and contacting trusted organizations directly about suspicious messages.
The VA said Walton is expanding the program through partnerships with local libraries. According to the department, these efforts showed that veterans also want help with online banking, shopping and other everyday internet use. Walton's long-term plan includes partnering with county libraries throughout the three-state region, the VA said.
