Topeka man accused of stabbing three people and assaulting others in alleged spree; bystander says he tripped the suspect
A Topeka, Kansas, man faces 16 booking charges, including aggravated battery and rape, after police say he stabbed three people, broke into two homes and attacked an elderly woman in a park on Wednesday, Oct. 28, according to a report from WIBW distributed by Gray News and carried by WCAX, Dakota News Now, Valley News Live and Live 5 News.
The man, identified as Adam Schwegman, made his first court appearance on Thursday, Oct. 29. A judge set his total bond at $3 million, the report said. The headline used by the outlets describes 17 victims, while the article itself lists 16 booking charges and does not break down how the victim count was reached.
Topeka police allege that the incidents began on S.W. Fillmore, where two people were stabbed. Schwegman's booking charges also include an alleged rape at that same address, according to the report.
Police say Schwegman then continued along the same road and broke into two homes. Four children, among them a four-month-old, were inside one of the houses, and officials said none of them were injured.
A third person was stabbed on a nearby street, police said. Authorities say a 70-year-old woman was then hurt in an attack at Ward Meade Park.
Ron Hubbard, who said he was spending time with a friend nearby, told WIBW he noticed a man who seemed out of place. "I happened to look up the street to my left, and I seen this strange guy," Hubbard said.
According to the report, another bystander had been at the park where the attack occurred, and the two men confronted the person running from the area. Hubbard said he stuck out his leg and tripped the man, who fell onto the grass and dropped a knife. Hubbard said he kicked the knife onto the sidewalk while the other bystander held the man.
The man broke free, but police took him into custody a short time later, the report said.
Hubbard told the station he had been reminded of a television scene in which a delivery driver tripped a fleeing car thief. He said he was glad to have helped but regretted the harm that had already been done.
"Well, if you see something bad, try to help stop it. I wish we could have got to it before this happened," Hubbard said.
The report did not provide details on the conditions of those who were stabbed or the woman injured at the park. Schwegman is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
