VA highlights nearly 30,000 open Homeland Security jobs for Veterans
The Department of Homeland Security has almost 30,000 open positions across 23 mission components, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is highlighting the openings for Veterans seeking new careers.
The information came from an episode of the VA series "At the Table," in which VA Deputy Secretary Paul R. Lawrence spoke with Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Troy Edgar. According to the VA, DHS components include law enforcement, maritime security, emergency management, cybersecurity, transportation security and immigration services. The VA said about 30 percent of DHS's 260,000 employees are already Veterans.
The VA pointed to tools for transitioning service members. The Coast Guard Credentialing Opportunities On-Line program, known as CG COOL, lists more than 2,000 industry-recognized credentials, and active duty members may receive up to $4,500 a year to pursue them, the VA said. Another tool, MilGears, helps match military occupations with civilian job pathways.
The VA also said the U.S. is expanding shipbuilding capacity to support construction of 11 new Arctic cutters, creating demand for welders, electricians, engineers and other skilled workers. According to the VA, cybersecurity is one of DHS's most urgent hiring priorities.
Edgar advised service members to gather service records early and tailor resumes to job descriptions, the VA said. Openings are listed at dhs.gov/homeland-security-careers.
