Five killed, two Memphis officers critically hurt in crash during emergency response

Five people died and three others, two of them Memphis police officers, were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash early Sunday in Memphis, Tennessee, according to a report by WMC that was distributed through Gray News and carried by Cleveland 19, WALB, Hawaii News Now and WCAX.

The Memphis Police Department said the collision happened at about 12:26 a.m. where Hickory Hill Road meets Raines Road, the outlets reported.

According to the police department's account, the officers had been dispatched to a call about a man down in the area of Flowering Peach Drive and Mendenhall Road. While heading to that call, their vehicle collided with another vehicle at the Hickory Hill and Raines intersection.

Four people who were inside the second vehicle died at the scene, the report said.

The two officers were taken to a hospital in critical condition, as were two more occupants of the other vehicle. One of those two occupants later died at the hospital, bringing the number of deaths to five, according to the report.

That leaves three people hospitalized with serious injuries: the two officers and one occupant of the second vehicle.

The identities of the people who died and of those injured were not included in the report. The outlets also did not report the condition of the officers beyond the initial critical classification, or how many people in total were in the second vehicle beyond the five described.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation into the crash, the outlets reported. Details such as which vehicle had the right of way, the speeds involved, and whether the police vehicle was using emergency lights or sirens at the time were not described in the report.

It was also not reported whether anyone responded to the original man-down call after the crash, or what became of the person who was the subject of that call.

The four outlets carried the same account, and all said more information would be released as it becomes available. No outlet reported any charges in connection with the crash.
