VA says North Texas care center staff helped reunite veteran with daughter after 22 years
A resident of the VA North Texas Community Living Center reunited with her daughter on July 19, 2026, after more than 22 years without contact, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
In a story published by VA News, the department said Judith Collins and her daughter, Toni, had been estranged for more than two decades. According to the VA, center staff and providers encouraged Collins over several years to consider reconnecting. Providers Dr. Emily Lukose, Dr. Lara Tucker and Dr. Vijaya Sudanagunta helped her work through emotions related to the relationship, the department said.
The VA said Toni and her husband, William, flew from Indiana to Dallas-Fort Worth. According to the department, Toni spent hours in a VA emergency room parking lot before going inside. Staff helped Collins get ready and prepared her room with flowers and cake, the VA said.
The department said mother and daughter embraced, spent more than two hours talking and sharing memories, and cut a cake together. According to the VA, Toni later sent a message saying the visit felt easier and more healing than she had expected.
The VA said center staff had built trust with Toni for nearly a year, and it attributed the reunion to coordinated care under the health system's whole health approach.
