Trump schedules Mississippi rally for Sen. Hyde-Smith as polls point to closer Senate race
President Donald Trump is set to hold a campaign rally Monday in Corinth, Mississippi, in support of Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, according to a Gray DC report published by Dakota News Now, Cleveland 19, Live 5 News and 1011 Now.
The event is scheduled for Crossroads Arena, with the president expected to begin speaking at 6 p.m. Central Time, the report said. It comes ahead of the midterm elections.
According to the Gray DC report, the rally is intended to build support for Hyde-Smith, the state's incumbent senator, along with other Republican candidates on the ballot. The visit follows polling that indicates the Senate contest has grown more competitive, even though Mississippi has historically voted Republican, the outlets reported.
Trump confirmed his plans in remarks quoted in the report. "They've asked me to go. I'm going there, I think, on Monday. And I look forward to it," he said.
Republican Party officials have described their approach to the race as centered on getting their own voters to the polls, according to the report. Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters pointed to the president's ability to motivate people who do not regularly vote.
"This president knows how to turn out these low propensity voters. And the midterms, historically, it's all about turnout," Gruters said, as reported by the outlets.
Hyde-Smith's Democratic opponent, Scott Colom, characterized the president's trip as evidence that Republicans are worried about the race. In a post on X cited in the Gray DC report, Colom referred to the senator by the nickname "Cindy High Prices" and said she was calling on Trump for help because she was afraid of questions about her record.
Colom specifically pointed to what he described as her votes to cut health care, her treatment of farmers and her role in blocking the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein, according to the report. The outlets did not include a response from Hyde-Smith to those criticisms.
The four outlets carried the same Gray DC wire story, and their accounts do not differ on any details of the planned rally.
The report did not specify which polls showed the race tightening or provide figures from those surveys.
