Off-duty VA nurses perform CPR on church member in Birmingham, VA says

Two off-duty Birmingham VA nurses performed CPR on a 93-year-old woman who became unresponsive during a Sunday service at a Birmingham church, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The VA said nurses Ann Woods and Theresa Turner were attending worship at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church when the woman, a founding member of the church, became unresponsive during Pastor Roy Peterson's sermon. According to the department, the nurses assessed her condition and, after being unable to find a pulse, began chest compressions, alternating so care was continuous.

Turner said that after a second round of compressions they were able to find a pulse and the woman regained consciousness. The VA said she was taken to a nearby medical facility for evaluation and is in good spirits.

Woods credited her experience as a registered nurse and quarterly Resuscitation Quality Improvement training provided by the VA. Turner urged people to learn CPR.

Pastor Peterson said that after learning about the nurses' training through Birmingham VA, the church was motivated to begin offering CPR certification classes to its congregation, according to the department. The VA did not say on what date the incident occurred.
