A 22-year-old Philadelphia man died and a 21-year-old man was hospitalized after gunfire Saturday night in a shopping center parking lot near Delaware State University in Dover, according to police accounts reported by 6abc and NBC10.

Police identified the man who died as Nasir Cox of Philadelphia. The 21-year-old, who was hit in the upper body, remained in stable condition Sunday morning, NBC10 reported. His name was not released.

Both outlets said the shooting happened around 9:19 p.m. at Dover Commons, a shopping center on the 1200 block of North Dupont Highway.

Police said thousands of students and visitors had attended the university's homecoming festivities and were told to leave campus at roughly 6 p.m. Crowds then collected at several shopping centers and other locations nearby, 6abc reported.

More than 50 officers were already on the scene when the shots were fired, police said. According to NBC10, Delaware State Police joined local officers from Wilmington, Camden, Smyrna, Dover and New Castle County. Officials said those officers had been managing crowds and answering calls about several fights, disorderly conduct and reports of gunfire in more than one spot.

NBC10 reported that officers working to control a crowd in an adjacent lot heard multiple shots and saw people fleeing the Dover Commons lot. Responders reached the 21-year-old first and, while helping him, found Cox, who had also been wounded.

According to 6abc, police said Route 13 between the campus and the nearby shopping centers was so clogged with cars and people on foot that an ambulance would have been delayed. Officers chose to take both men to a hospital themselves. Cox died there.

Neither outlet reported any arrests or details about a possible suspect. Police said the investigation continues.

Dover police want to hear from anyone with information, pictures or video from around the time of the shooting, NBC10 reported. The department's Criminal Investigations Unit can be reached at 302-736-7111, and tips may also be sent via Delaware Crime Stoppers or a form on the department's website.
