Veterans' Affairs Deputy Secretary Paul R. Lawrence and Transportation Deputy Secretary Steve Bradbury discussed transportation career opportunities for veterans in the latest episode of the VA series "At the Table," the Department of Veterans Affairs said in an Oct. 22 article.

According to the VA, Bradbury said the Department of Transportation is undergoing one of the largest modernization efforts in its history, with thousands of infrastructure projects on highways, ports, rail systems and the air traffic control network creating demand for skilled workers.

The VA said nearly 40% of the Federal Aviation Administration's workforce has military experience, including air traffic controllers, safety inspectors and maintenance experts. The FAA offers pathways for former military pilots and veterans with maintenance, communications or logistics backgrounds, the department said.

In trucking, the VA said DOT's Freedom Haulers initiative aims to bring more veterans into commercial driving, and veterans who operated heavy vehicles in the military often qualify for streamlined commercial driver's license processes through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

The Maritime Administration offers credential assistance, fee waivers and training programs for transitioning service members seeking maritime careers, according to the VA.

The department also said DOT will host an upcoming Veterans Small Business Summit at its Washington, D.C., headquarters, offering networking sessions, direct hiring opportunities and support for veterans exploring business partnerships.
