Zurn Mechanical: A Philadelphia HVACR Contractor Built on Longevity
Zurn Mechanical LLC is a Black-owned heating, cooling and refrigeration company based in Philadelphia, PA. Owner Eric Martin and his team serve residential and commercial customers in Philadelphia, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware, handling repairs, installations and new construction.
The company works on all brands and models of HVACR equipment. That includes boilers, heat pumps, air conditioners, gas and oil furnaces, walk-in coolers and freezers, VRF systems, and mini splits from 1 to 100 tons. Zurn Mechanical also services commercial kitchens and range hoods. The business says it is fully licensed and insured in every state where it pulls permits.
Before each job, the company offers a full consultation to explain the available options so customers can choose what fits their home or business.
**From building engineer to business owner**
Martin started Zurn Mechanical in 2001 after finishing school. Before that, he worked as a class A building engineer. "Was a class a building engineer for US Marshall building in Arlington Virginia I wanted to expand my career and not limit myself to just commercial HVACR maintenance services," he said. "Was willing to take a chance and dive straight into the ocean what a great choice I made."
Asked why he started the business, his answer was short: "Growth & independence."
He built it on very little. Martin said his last paycheck from his job was $1,700. He used $400 to form the LLC, $200 for insurance and $70 for a state license. He sold his vehicle for $4,000, bought his first van at auction for $1,800 and spent $1,500 on the rest of his tools. He paid $300 for advertising with the service then called Service Magic. The Yellow Book gave him his first month free on an $800-a-month page in Delaware, and, in his words, "then phone started ringing."
**What sets the company apart**
Martin holds an HVACR Master Contractor license in several states. He said the state board requires ten years of experience, schooling and a six-hour exam for the license. "This sets my business apart from most companies," he said.
Today his customers include residential and commercial property managers, investors, restaurant owners and homeowners.
Martin said the hardest part has been dealing with many different personalities among customers and employees, and building lasting relationships with good people. He got through it by putting himself in other people's shoes and striving to put full effort into quality work, leaving the company's signature on every job. He said he has also learned to lead and motivate employees by teaching, helping and guiding them on HVAC services.
The company hires skilled people from the community and has provided services for affordable housing. When asked what he is most proud of, Martin said one word: "Longevity."
Looking ahead, Martin plans to expand into IT infrastructure, ammonia refrigeration and hospital equipment services.
His advice to new business owners: "Customer service is key not all relationships are good be honest with pricing be honest with yourself so you can be motivated to do 100% of what you were hired to do."
**How to support Zurn Mechanical**
The best way to help, Martin said, is to refer good customers. Zurn Mechanical can be reached by phone at (267) 938-0141 and serves Philadelphia and the surrounding states of New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.
The company is also hiring. Martin is looking for experienced HVACR technicians who can provide five-star service and communicate well with customers.
