National Guard member wounded in shooting near U.S. Capitol; DC man charged
A member of the National Guard was shot in the leg late Sunday after guard members stepped in to stop a street fight in Washington's Capitol Hill neighborhood, according to a Gray DC report carried by Dakota News Now, WIS, WCAX and Valley News Live.
Interim D.C. police chief Jeff Carroll said the shooting took place at about 11:10 p.m. Guard members had been seated in a parked van when a fight broke out on the street, and they left the vehicle to intervene, the report said.
According to Carroll, a man involved in the fight then produced a handgun. "Members of the National Guard immediately gave commands to that individual to put down the gun," Carroll said, as reported by the outlets. He said the man then aimed the weapon at the guard members, who fired in response.
Police said three guard members fired their weapons and hit the man. One guard member was also wounded in the leg. The reports did not specify who fired the shot that struck the service member. Both the man and the guard member were taken to a hospital.
On Monday afternoon, the Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest of Jerrell Jackson, 41, of Southeast D.C., in connection with the shooting, the outlets reported. He is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault on a police officer and emergency personnel, carrying a pistol without a license, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Jackson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The reports did not describe his condition or whether he has an attorney.
A spokesperson for Joint Task Force-District of Columbia, the unit overseeing the Guard's deployment in the city, said Monday that the wounded service member had been discharged from the hospital. The spokesperson identified the guard member as part of the Georgia Army National Guard but did not release a name, according to the reports.
The shooting came roughly 11 months after two National Guard members were shot near the White House, the outlets reported. One of those service members died the following day.
Guard troops have been patrolling Washington's streets since August 2025, when President Donald Trump declared a crime emergency in the city, according to the Gray DC report.
The four outlets published the same wire story, and no additional accounts from witnesses or the National Guard about the sequence of events were included in the reports.
