A middle school principal in Logan County, West Virginia, was arrested Tuesday and charged with public intoxication and child neglect creating risk, according to a WSAZ report distributed through Gray News and published by WOWT, KCRG, WABI and WIS.

The Logan Police Department identified the principal as Michael Bryan Kidd, 41, the report said. He has been charged but not convicted, and he is presumed innocent.

According to the report, officers said the arrest took place at the school after police met with a member of the Logan County Board of Education. The report did not name the school or describe what led to that meeting.

Kidd was arraigned in Logan County Magistrate Court, WSAZ reported. The coverage did not say whether he entered a plea, whether bond was set, or whether he has an attorney who could speak for him.

Logan County Schools issued a statement confirming that Kidd is the employee it had removed from duty because of the criminal charges, according to the outlets. The district said it had learned of allegations about the conduct of an employee during work hours.

District officials said they acted quickly once they received the information and took steps right away to deal with the situation, the report said. The district added that the employee will stay out of the role while it conducts further review and weighs what action may be appropriate.

The school system did not share any details about the accusations themselves, WSAZ reported. Police statements cited in the coverage also did not explain the basis for the child neglect charge, including whether any students were involved or how they may have been put at risk.

All four outlets carried the same account, which originated with WSAZ, and no outlet reported details beyond that shared report. It was not clear from the coverage when Kidd is next scheduled to appear in court or how long the district's review may take.
