True News is now taking applications for its Business Spotlight, a free feature for Black-owned businesses anywhere in the United States.

Each month the editor picks two businesses. Each one is featured for 30 days, and there is no charge at any point: True News will never ask a featured business for payment.

What a featured business gets

A write-up by the True News editor, built from the owner's own answers to the same interview every business gets: how it started, who it serves, what sets it apart, what has been hardest, and how readers can support it.

Its own page on True News, with its description, photo or logo, website and public phone number.

A spotlight banner across True News for the full 30 days. The banner never appears next to missing-persons information.

A place in the Black Box Marketplace, the Bagley Enterprises directory and store for Black-owned businesses, which opens in November.

At the end of the 30 days, a count of how many people viewed the business's page and clicked through to its website.

Who can apply

A business that is at least half owned, and run day to day, by one or more Black owners. It must be operating legally in the United States and already serving customers.

The spotlight does not feature adult content, gambling, payday or high-interest lending, political campaigns or committees, or anything illegal.

How the editor chooses

The editor reads every application and looks at the business's story, what it offers its community, whether it is hiring, and whether it can be checked through a website, a listing or a public record. A business featured in the last 12 months waits its turn. Every business is featured only with its owner's written permission, given on the application form, and the owner can end the spotlight at any time.

How to apply

Fill out the one-page form at truenews.bagleyenterprises.net/business/apply. The interview questions are optional, but answering them makes the write-up yours. Contact details are never published.
