Child and adult killed after pickup truck drives through youth soccer game in Wichita

A child and an adult were killed and several other people were injured Saturday when a pickup truck drove onto a youth soccer game at a sports complex in Wichita, Kansas, according to a Gray News report carried by WCAX, WIS, Dakota News Now and Cleveland 19.

Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses said the game was being played at the Stryker Sports Complex, the report said. The driver of the truck was taken into custody, according to the outlets.

The report, which originated with Wichita station KWCH, did not identify the driver or say whether any charges had been filed. It also did not name the people who were killed or injured, give the age of the child, or describe the extent of the injuries.

A witness at the scene told KWCH, which brands its newscasts as 12 News, that a black pickup truck crossed the youth soccer fields and struck several people. The witness said the truck came to a stop roughly 100 to 200 yards farther down the fields.

The same witness described dozens of emergency responders at the complex performing CPR and treating those who had been hit, according to the report.

The outlets did not report what may have caused the truck to enter the fields, how fast it was traveling, or whether investigators believe the crash was intentional. No details were given about how many people were attending the game or which teams were playing.

All four outlets published the same Gray News account, so no differing versions of events were available. Police were expected to provide another update later Saturday evening, the report said.

True News will update this story as officials release more information about the victims, the driver and the circumstances of the crash.
