VA says more than 100,000 Veterans experienced food insecurity in fiscal year 2025

More than 100,000 Veterans experienced food insecurity in fiscal year 2025, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which outlined how its Food Security Office aims to help Veterans facing homelessness or housing instability.

In a VA News article, the department said food insecurity and housing instability often stem from similar underlying challenges, including financial hardship, unemployment, mental health conditions and substance use disorders. VA said reliable access to healthy food can reduce daily stress and give Veterans more time and energy to attend appointments, secure employment and reconnect with support systems.

The VA said its Food Security Office takes a "food is medicine" approach, supporting local VA healthcare providers as they connect Veterans to food, nutrition and supportive services. According to the department, services vary by facility, but Veterans can be connected through a social worker, primary care provider, registered dietitian or other care team members to food pantries, SNAP and other food assistance programs, medically tailored meals or groceries, nutrition counseling, and housing, healthcare and employment services.

The VA said Veterans worried about accessing food can call 1-800-MyVA411 (1-800-698-2411). Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-424-3838, the department said.
