St. Louis public schools cancel co-op football season as police investigate complaints
Saint Louis Public Schools has ended the rest of the season for the Clyde C. Miller/Sumner cooperative high school football team while police look into complaints about conduct linked to the team, KMOV reported in a story distributed by Gray News.
The district made the announcement in a statement released Friday, according to the report. It said the decision followed reports of serious misconduct, both behavioral and physical, involving students connected with the team.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department received complaints from more than one person on Thursday, the day before the district's announcement, officials said, according to KMOV.
Police confirmed that their investigation is at an early stage, the station reported. According to the report, the inquiry mainly involves the team's student-athletes.
No arrests or charges were described in the reporting. Authorities declined to answer questions about the nature of the complaints or the status of the investigation, KMOV reported. The district's statement, as described by the station, did not detail what conduct was alleged or how many students may be involved.
District leaders are working to connect affected students and their families with support resources, according to the report. The district also said it is addressing safety concerns, though the coverage did not say what specific steps have been taken.
The Clyde C. Miller/Sumner team is a combined program that draws players from two schools in the city district. The coverage did not say how many games remained on the team's schedule or how opposing teams would be affected by the cancellation.
The same Gray News report was published by several affiliated stations, including WKYT, WABI, 1011 Now and Alaska's News Source. No outlet reported additional details beyond the district's statement and the police confirmation.
The investigation is ongoing.
