Billy Joel says brain condition has stopped him from performing and driving

Billy Joel says a brain condition called hydrocephalus is preventing him from performing concerts or driving, according to a Gray News report carried by several stations, including WBTV, WLBT and AZFamily.

The 77-year-old musician made the disclosure in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He said the condition has affected his balance, and he also listed effects on his memory, vision and hearing.

Joel told The Hollywood Reporter that his neurologist warned him about the strain of live shows. "Every time you do a show, it's like you're getting a concussion," he said, recalling the doctor's explanation.

According to the Gray News report, Joel cited several aspects of performing as concerns for his health: the very high sound levels, stage lighting, stress and the physical energy a concert demands. He also said he is currently not permitted to drive.

Joel said he hopes to return to the stage. However, he indicated that he must first undergo a series of medical tests before he will know whether that is possible, Gray News reported.

The singer also sought to play down the seriousness of his diagnosis. "They call it a brain disorder, but it's not that serious," he said, adding that it mainly affects his balance, according to the report.

Gray News, citing the Mayo Clinic, described hydrocephalus as an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in cavities deep inside the brain known as ventricles. The excess fluid can cause the ventricles to enlarge and increase pressure on the brain.

The Mayo Clinic notes that symptoms differ depending on a person's age, Gray News reported. In adults aged 60 and over, frequent signs include memory problems, difficulty walking, reduced coordination or balance, and a gradual decline in other thinking abilities.

The reports did not say when Joel's medical tests are scheduled or how long it could be before he learns whether he can resume touring.
