Penn Wood High School pauses all athletics as district investigates alleged incident
Penn Wood High School in Lansdowne has halted its entire athletics program while an outside investigator examines an alleged incident the William Penn School District has tied to the culture and climate of its sports teams, according to several Philadelphia-area outlets.
WHYY reported that the district made the announcement Thursday night and had still not described the nature of the alleged incident by Friday morning. According to 6abc Action News, the district's letter to families left unclear who or what is the subject of the inquiry.
Reports varied on how far the pause extends. 6abc said sports at the district's middle school were also stopped. FOX 29, WHYY and CBS Philadelphia described the suspension as applying to the high school's athletics.
FOX 29 reported that Penn Wood's varsity football squad will give up its Monday, Oct. 15 matchup with Chichester by forfeit. The station added that the district has offered no timeline for resuming sports or finishing the investigation.
In a statement cited by the outlets, the district acknowledged that students, families, coaches and supporters would be let down by the decision and said it wants every student to have a safe and respectful setting. FOX 29 reported the district said it would conduct a thorough review under its policies and that the safety and well-being of students come first.
The district plans a climate survey through which student-athletes can describe their experiences. 6abc reported that families are also being asked to send the district's communications office examples of good experiences with Penn Wood sports, which officials said would show them what is going well and where to improve.
WHYY placed the suspension in the context of a recent case in Montgomery County, where the Cheltenham School District called off its high school's 2026 football season. That decision followed two locker room hazing incidents alleged to have occurred last year. According to WHYY, criminal charges were filed against six student players and four former coaches at Cheltenham High School after a grand jury probe lasting six months. None of the outlets reported any connection between that case and the Penn Wood investigation.
WHYY described William Penn as the fourth-largest school district in Delaware County. Its roughly 4,500 students come from six boroughs: Yeadon, Lansdowne, East Lansdowne, Darby, Colwyn and Aldan. The outlet also reported that in 2025, amid a budget shortfall, the district warned it might eliminate its athletics and arts programs.
