Russian National Extradited to New York on Charges of Evading Sanctions on Russia
Alexander Suvorov, a 52-year-old Russian national, has been extradited from Sweden to the Northern District of New York on charges related to exporting U.S. micro-electronic components to Russia through a Hong Kong front company, the Justice Department said.
According to the department, Suvorov was extradited on Oct. 15 and was expected to make his initial court appearance on Oct. 16 in Albany, New York.
A criminal complaint alleges that between about March 2022 and April 2023, Suvorov led a procurement network that unlawfully exported U.S. electronic components to Russia, the department said. The complaint alleges his main role was maintaining Hong Kong-based front companies, including GS Group Limited, which were used to order components from U.S. companies, conceal that the end users were in Russia, and transship the items to Russia. Some of the components can be used in military communication, radar and precision location systems, according to the department.
Suvorov is charged with conspiracy to commit international promotional money laundering, conspiracy to commit outbound smuggling, and conspiracy to violate the Export Control Reform Act. The most serious counts carry maximum penalties of 20 years in prison, the department said.
The FBI and the Commerce Department are investigating. The department said Swedish authorities assisted with the extradition. Charges are allegations, and Suvorov is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
