Army Veteran Writes Song Honoring VA Caregivers in Grand Junction
An Army Veteran who received care at the Grand Junction VA Community Living Center has written a song as a tribute to the staff who cared for him, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said.
According to the VA, John E. Wasson worked with his son-in-law, James Westover, to write "What You Do Matters," dedicated to staff at VA Western Colorado Healthcare System. The song was released during Nurses Week, but Wasson dedicated it to everyone who helps Veterans receive care at Grand Junction VA Medical Center, the department said.
Wasson enlisted in the Army in 1957 and worked with the Honest John and Little John rocket systems at Fort Bliss, Texas, the VA said. When no manual existed for testing procedures, he wrote one that became the Army's main guide, according to the department. He separated in 1961, later worked on rocket testing on Kwajalein Atoll and built a 50-year career in international trade.
The VA said Wasson felt lost and discouraged after a stay at a community hospital in Henderson, Nevada, before arriving at the Grand Junction facility. His daughter, JoNi Wasson Westover, said he was treated with "dignity, compassion, respect and genuine kindness."
"I hope every member of VA team will know that their kindness leaves a lasting legacy," Wasson said, according to the department.
