VA says it has expanded health information sharing with community providers

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said it is continuing to improve how health information is shared between VA and non-VA providers, with the aim of giving both sets of healthcare teams a more complete view of a Veteran's health history.

According to the department, more than 14,000 VA staff members have been trained this fiscal year on electronic health information exchange tools, which allow providers to send and receive health information from non-VA providers directly within VA health systems. VA said it has also updated and consolidated guidance materials to support more consistent use of these tools across the department.

The department said it corrected display issues that had prevented some allergy and encounter information from community providers from appearing correctly in VA records. VA said the fix ensures incoming records appear as intended before VA providers make care decisions.

VA also said it recently completed testing with five non-VA providers supporting the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina. According to the department, the testing verifies that exchanged documents are accurate and usable before care coordination begins.

In addition, VA said it is improving how consent management and interoperability analytics are shared with non-VA and community providers to help them connect with VA systems and properly identify the Veterans they serve.
